Training Recap – Week 21

I had a goal to finish 150 miles by the official start of summer.  I came really close at 143.25 miles.

There are 10 weeks until the Half Marathon and I am a nervous wreck.  I don’t know what the course is going to be like and I haven’t been training up to par.  I have been doing better than a lot of people think but I am just not a runner.  I enjoy walking and being outdoors when it is cool.  I know training would be so much easier in the morning when it is cooler but like I have mentioned I am not a morning person.  So I am training in the evening after work and it is not very cool in the evening.   I hate being hot and it is getting hotter every day.  I really worry about feeling overheated on race day.  If anyone knows any tricks to stay cool I would greatly appreciate them.  Right now I plan to have some peppermint oil which is a cooling oil and really light running clothes on for race day.

Training Update - Week 18

I have had a few requests to know a little more about my training and what methods I use for walking/running.  There are four ways I get my workouts completed.  I go to the gym and walk/run on a treadmill.  I walk at home either in place using my Jeff Galloway app or Leslie Sansone's walk DVDs.  The last method is outside in my neighborhood.  All four work but I definitely get different results from each method.  I find that I work harder when I go to the gym or use the Leslie Sansone's DVDs.  The Jeff Galloway app is my least favorite method.  It was working for me when I first started training but I have found that it doesn't push me like the other methods do. When I walk outside I find that I walk slower mainly because it's harder for me to breathe outside and we have a lot of hills in my neighborhood.  I am still moving though and the hill work is good conditioning for me.  By far my favorite method is the Leslie Sansone DVDs.  She makes the walking fun because it feels more like aerobics.  I also have to keep up with her pace so I feel like I push myself harder.  From now on I will post my method in parenthesis.  LS is for Leslie Sansone, TM is for treadmill, JG is for Jeff Galloway app and ON is outside neighborhood or work. I am also adding Windsor Pilates back in to my routine. I had great results with these DVDs several years ago for toning my body.  I am hoping it will work again.  This week I also had fun swimming  with the family on Memorial Day. That was a fun change.  I am not a great swimmer but I enjoy being in the water.  It took me 35 years to learn how to tread water.  My nephew taught me how last year and it finally sunk in.  I spent about 10 minutes treading water while I watched my niece and nephew jump off the diving board several times.  Then I played with them for a couple hours in the pool. It was relaxing and a little bit of a workout all in one.
